The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
