RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
