EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
